African Grey Parrots Need Space!
Why an African Grey parrot should not be mistreated…
Pets need to be loved and cared for and that is the very reason that the animals which we keep and maintain at home have been named pets (the dictionary meaning of a pet is “favorite or darling”). This is because pets are their owners’ source of joy and happiness.
Various governments all over the world, as well as some NGOs like PETA and SPCA, are doing their utmost to safeguard all types of creatures, especially the endangered ones, from ill treatment or wrongful custody.
So as socially responsible citizens, we have to, on our part, ensure and educate everyone around us not to subject any creature to cruelty or inhuman behavior. That is the least we can do!
But unfortunately not every story about parrots is a happy one!
Sidney, an African Grey Parrot was rescued from his owners, in a grievous condition placed in the comfortable surrounding of a Parrot Sanctuary.
The poor creature is unable to exercise his birth right and fly because of a badly injured wing. People think it is fashionable to have parrots, but they are ignorant about the aspects of proper parrot care and especially parrots’ diet.
The sanctuary boasts of some 125 unusual and colorful birds like macaws, cockatiels and even small finches. Some birds are actually are up for sale while others will find the sanctuary as their permanent residence.
Some owners who could not take care of their pets owing to family constraints like limited space, moving house or some other reason have left them there.
Parrots need lot of care, specific diet and need to have free space at home and are required to socialize with their ilk and should not be caged and confined for long. Absence of these facilities have led to their wide spread neglect. An African Grey is no exception and it needs space too!
This paricular sanctuary is expanding with the acquisition of a new area for a very large aviary which shall have many African Greys. The parrot aviary was bought with help from generous public and private donations.
This will also help many parrots and other birds to find their home here. Good care for these birds will ensure their longevity and an eternal joy for all bird and parrot lovers who care to visit to see the birds.
